Mavis was a fabulous Southern cook, and her lifelong dream was to publish her own cookbook. As she inched closer to 90, her daughter Holly and granddaughter Shannon decided it was now or never and the journey began: sifting through boxes of recipes, deciphering her notoriously bad handwriting, and having conversations with Mavis that connected history with her recipes. A Southern Cooking Lifestyle merged with family legacy to publish what became Mavis’ Kitchen. Mavis passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on August 12, 2017 knowing her life-long dream of writing her cookbook would become a reality. Mavis’ Kitchen was written through the lens of a Great Depression mindset that has become unexpectedly relevant today as people across the world change their attitudes and habits in the kitchen. Stocking shelves and pantry with basics, and creating meals out of leftovers stored in the fridge or freezer, is the order of the day. This has always been the Mavis’ Kitchen philosophy.
